Who Am I?

IMG_2657

My name is Mandy Skinner and I started my fitness journey many years ago, perhaps more than a decade, though I’m not sure as fitness has always been a part of who I am.  I have had a lot of highs and lows as I worked my way through the various phases; running, yoga, weightlifting, Crossfit, bodybuilding.  Not to mention my struggle with nutrition.  The pressure I put on myself to be thin was heavy during my young adulthood.  I lacked both the strength and knowledge to approach it in a healthy manner, so I struggled with under-eating and/or punishing myself for over-eating for many years.  I lacked balance, strength, and sight for who I wanted to be or how to get there.

It was not until we started our family that I began to love my body for what it could do; learn what helped it and what hurt it.  Carrying and raising my children, Sean and Sarah, showed me how strong and capable I truly am.  It had nothing to do with what I saw in the mirror or what images were portrayed in the media, this strength came from within.DSCF6921

It was at this point that I decided I wanted to help other women who have struggled in one way or another with their bodies, nutrition, fitness, and goals.  I am now a Certified Weight Management Specialist (NCCPT Nutrition) and Certified Personal Trainer.  My mission is to help other women learn how to eat and exercise in a way that is healthy and balanced while working to achieve performance and aesthetic goals.  Join me in the lifelong journey to health and happiness through balance.

DSCF6945The blog is titled Soccer Mom with Muscles because I am just that, a mom first, and an expert in nutrition and fitness second.  It has taken me years to find inner-harmony and in this search, I realize that there is nothing without family.  No matter how fit, strong, lean, or competitive I am, my greatest pride is my family.

As a mom and wife I know that sometimes “life” gets in the way of our health and wellness pursuits.  And you know what? That’s ok.  We live a healthy active life, so that we can enjoy it.  So the truth is, life never gets in the way because life is the reason behind it all.  So, the balance that we find in life, family, nutrition, fitness, happiness, and the pursuit of our goals may not be flawless, but if we are doing the best we can to be a better mom, wife, sister, daughter, and friend, then that, to me, is perfect.
